Following our previous blog about the fabrics we’ve used for the dresses and sweaters of our first collection, we will inform you about the fabrics for the other half of our collection in this blog: a top, pants and t-shirts.
We were lucky to get our hands on a recycled polyester (65%) and organic cotton (35%) blend for our pants. The recycled polyester is made from Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottles, used for water and soda packaging. It is combined with organic cotton to create a soft, luxurious, colorfast fabric. The pants will come in two colors: charcoal grey and rusty orange.
For our top, we’ve sourced an ochre yellow bamboo and cotton blend. We absolutely wanted to add something ochre as it has been our favorite color for the past couple of years. Bamboo fabric is a natural textile made from the pulp of bamboo grass (not the same as Panda food). Bamboo is one of the most sustainable plants. It is easily replenished and requires no pesticides to grow. It grows quickly and does not require chemicals or irrigation, and biodegrades more quickly than oil-based synthetics.
Our t-shirts are made from eco-friendly cotton. Organic cotton is even better for farmers’ health, their businesses and the environment. But right now, less than 1% of the world’s cotton is certified organic and demand is exceeding supply. There’s no general vision or plan with regard to the best way forward. At the same time, it is difficult for farmers to convert. Going organic requires new skills, knowledge and access to certified organic seeds. Profits may also decrease the first years compared to genetically modified seeds, which means farmers have no incentive to make the switch. This is why we made the decision to use local, eco-friendly cotton for our t-shirts and support The Organic Cotton Accelerator. This is a social project with a focus on creating a prosperous organic cotton sector, that benefits everyone – from farmer to consumer.
In the meanwhile we’ve received a part of our collection. We can tell you it looks so good! : ) Now we will wait for the other part to arrive and then we can shoot the whole collection for our webshop. We’re so excited! We will show you some pictures behind the scenes of our photoshoot in a following blog and after that we will finally launch. We can’t wait!
